We are looking for a talented Data Journalist to join our team—someone who can bring data to life through compelling storytelling and insightful analysis.
Job Summary
As a Data Journalist at ICIR, you will collect, analyze, and interpret data to uncover stories that highlight important social, economic, and political trends. Working closely with the editorial team, you will use data visualization and digital tools to create accessible and engaging reports. We’re seeking someone with a strong passion for investigative storytelling, a solid background in data analysis, and expertise in handling large datasets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Generate and pitch data-driven story ideas that align with ICIR’s editorial mission, including ideas for visual storytelling across various platforms.
- Collect, clean, and analyze datasets from sources such as government databases, public records, and proprietary data.
- Collaborate with editors, reporters, and designers to create data visualizations (charts, maps, infographics) that enhance narrative accessibility.
- Use data and visual journalism tools and workflows to produce high-quality content.
- Develop interactive tools and dashboards that engage readers, allowing them to explore data independently.
- Improve data quality through routine monitoring.
- Stay updated on current trends and issues in data journalism to keep stories relevant.
- Fact-check and verify data sources to ensure the accuracy and credibility of published content.
- Research, write, coordinate, and deliver high-quality digital content, including infographics, interactive maps, multimedia explainers, and other data-focused formats.
- Build models to address emerging content problems.
- Manage data pipelines from flat files and third-party systems to data warehouses, automating routine processes as needed.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to manage data logistics, including data transfers, understanding structures, and project execution.
- Support ICIR’s team in optimizing available tools for improved workflows.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
2+ years of experience in data journalism or data analysis, preferably in media.
Proficiency with data analysis tools like Excel, SQL, R, or Python.
Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Flourish, Datawrapper, or similar.
Strong understanding of journalistic ethics and accuracy in reporting.
Ability to translate complex data into clear, accessible narratives.
Excellent writing and communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
Knowledge of web development languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is a plus.
